Alexandra Palace has dominated the north London skyline for nearly 150 years. Much loved by generations of Londoners it has played host to an amazing variety of events.
'A Palace for the People' is a local history video documentary which traces the story of the Alexandra Park and Alexandra Palace from the original inspiration to the drama of the second fire in 1980.
It covers the many events for which 'Ally Pally' is famous: fires, exhibitions, the organ and other concerts, television, the Victorian theatre, trams and trains, the park, fireworks and bank holidays, racing, cricket, the palace in wartime, financial crises, private and public ownership, royal visits and much more...
It brings together for the first time all the major sources to tell the story:
- Yehudi Menuhin and organ builder Henry Willis recall the triumphs and dramas of music at the palace
- experts relate the palace's history and local people relive their memories of the 'Ally Pally'
- eye witnesses describe the 1980 fire
All this is illustrated with rare archive photographs, prints, recordings and film including material not seen publicly before. Archive material and advice came from a wide range of sources including the Alexandra Palace management team, Hornsey Historical Society, Haringey Museum and Archive Service, a range of experts and many local people.
